In a surprising twist amidst a tumultuous week for Tesla, President Trump announced via Truth Social that he plans to purchase a new Tesla vehicle to show support for CEO Elon Musk.
This move comes as Tesla grapples with significant challenges, including a 15% drop in stock value and widespread protests against the company.
Trump’s proclamation, aimed at rallying conservatives and his political base, claimed that these boycotts are “illegal,” despite political boycotts being protected under the First Amendment in the United States.
Analysts expect a year-over-year decline of about 25,000 units
Trump’s statement on social media further characterized Musk as a crucial figure striving to “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,” and he framed the protests as part of a broader attack on American entrepreneurial spirit.
The president’s endorsement could potentially stimulate some sales in the U.S. market, primarily where Tesla has implemented aggressive financing discounts to boost demand. However, experts suggest that this gesture won’t address the more profound issues plaguing the automaker.
Reports indicate that Tesla is facing declining sales, particularly in Europe, with recent figures showing a sharp decrease in market performance. Analysts expect a year-over-year decline of about 25,000 units, a sign that the issues extend beyond consumer sentiment and political animosity.
Production complications in China, Tesla’s largest market, are compounding these difficulties, with current projections tracking 7,000 units behind previous quarters this year.
While Trump’s endorsement may appeal to his followers and encourage a few sales, it remains to be seen if this can counteract the ongoing crises Tesla faces both in sales and production. Musk has previously acknowledged the mounting challenges, and while political support may offer a temporary morale boost, the fundamental hurdles require more substantial solutions.
