Facebook is adding view counts to videos shared on the social network. In a post on its Newsroom, Video Product Management Director Fiji Simo explained how important video has become, and how the video count will work.

The new view count will only be visible on videos you share publicly. Next to the number of likes and comments, you’ll also start seeing the number of views listed, although it’s not available to everyone yet. Like auto playing videos in the news feed, this is a feature Facebook is rolling out slowly. Only videos shared after September 8th 2014 will get the view count included.

Elsewhere in the article, Fidji Simo revealed that video views on Facebook have grown by over 50% since May 2013, and over 60% of views are via mobile devices. The company claims that ‘video ranking’ in the News Feed was improved in June, meaning you should see ‘more relevant and interesting’ video. Another feature it’s testing is showing you other relevant videos when you finish watching one.
