Will we have a portable version of PlayStation 6? Rumors point to a new PSP

Many of us are still reflecting about the PlayStation 5 Pro, the new model that Sony has introduced to give a boost to its brand mid-generation. Its high price (it is the most expensive console ever launched by PlayStation) has sparked a lot of controversy over these weeks.

While we have reflected on whether a console like the PS5 Pro is necessary in the middle of a generation, it’s not what concerns us now. Today we are here to talk about the latest rumors.

According to Insider Gaming, the reputable leaker KeplerL2 reports that Sony currently has two chips (two SoCs as they are technically called) in development for PlayStation 6.

Two PlayStations for home, or a regular console and a desktop

KeplerL2 details that they are not sure if the plan is to emulate Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S strategy by launching a standard and less powerful version of the same console, or if it is something more elaborate.

The other great possibility is that Sony will launch a home console and a portable version, given how the market has skyrocketed, thanks to Nintendo with the Nintendo Switch and Valve, with the Steam Deck.

Before delving too much into the details, it is important to remember that we are only talking about rumors. Until the company officially reveals a product of this type, something it probably won’t do for many years, there is no real evidence that such a console is in development.

This is not the first series of rumors claiming that PlayStation and Xbox want to enter the portable console market. Many informants have stated that Microsoft is also working on a portable Xbox to compete with Nintendo.

The supposed device would be significantly more powerful than the always popular Switch and would come with Xbox Game Pass to provide players with an instant library of compatible titles. Although many have refuted the rumors of such a machine, reports insist that it is a long-term project that would likely take shape alongside the successor to the Series X.

Regarding PlayStation, the company recently disappointed many fans with the launch of the PlayStation Portal. The limited functionality of the Portal only reinforces the calls for a new PSP or PS Vita. Without a doubt, thousands of players would buy a new PSP at launch, and we would be the first.
