YouTube has announced that it will age-restrict some content about firearms and ban videos that show how to disable their safety devices.

According to Engadget, YouTube has quietly updated its policy on firearms to restrict content about automatic and homemade weapons to viewers over 18 years old.

It will also prohibit demonstrations on how to disable certain weapon safety devices for everyone, such as features that limit the release of a magazine.

A policy change that aims to increase citizen safety

“Starting from June 18, 2024, certain content showing how to remove safety devices will be prohibited,” reads a notice at the top of YouTube’s firearms policy. And “content showing the use of homemade firearms, automatic firearms, and certain firearm accessories will have age restrictions.”

It is unclear exactly when YouTube made these changes, but they were absent in their firearms policy in late February.

In a new section added to YouTube’s firearms policy, the platform states that videos showing the use of automatic weapons or homemade firearms (including those printed in 3D) will be restricted to viewers over 18 years old.

Videos showing the use of high-capacity chargers, homemade silencers, or accessories that simulate or convert weapons into automatic ones will also be age-restricted.
