Total War: Arena
DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that the first Pokémon ever created and designed was the ground and rock-type Rhydon? Despite the popularity of certain Pokémon mascots like Pikachu or Squirtle, the franchise’s art director and character designer Ken Sugimori has stated that Rhydon was the first ever Pokémon brought to life by the original team. The appearance of multiple and rather unsettling Rhydon statues in different Pokémon games are also a reference to this fact, as a gesture of respect towards the first-ever creature that brought about the existence of the franchise. Another interesting to note is that anime series protagonist Ash Ketchum’s starter Pokémon was originally supposed to be the pink and puffy Clefairy, but got swapped to Pikachu at the last minute due to its marketers deciding that the latter could be identified more easily by its young viewers.
Today, Pokémon’s popularity has reached an international level and has plenty of adoring fans in all age groups, along with a huge number of appearances in multiple media platforms like televisions series, movies, games, novels, and comic books. Its popularity is further proven by the fact that the download count for the rather short-lived Pokémon Go has surpassed Tinder on the Android platform and that Nintendo’s stock prices have increased by 23% after its launch, despite it being a free-to-play application.
