Just when it seemed like the week couldn’t get any better, the surprise announcement of a new Marvel game brightened up our month and the rest of the year. We’re going to delve into the reasons now, but an action game with two Avengers and written by the person responsible for Uncharted sounds amazing.
The Epic Games conference at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) on the state of the Unreal Engine 5 started with a surprise: a first look at 1943: Rise of Hydra, the new Marvel game by writer and director Amy Hennig, best known for her work on the Uncharted franchise.
It features a “set” of playable characters including Captain America and Black Panther and is described as a “narrative action and adventure game”.
What do we know about 1943: Rise of Hydra
“As the game’s narrative unfolds, players will take on the role of four central characters: a young Steve Rogers, aka Captain America; Azzuri, T’Challa’s grandfather and the World War II-era Black Panther; Gabriel Jones, an American soldier and member of the Howling Commandos; and Nanali, a Wakandan spy embedded in occupied Paris,” Marvel explains in the press release.
1943: Rise of Hydra was presented by Epic with the excuse that they are developing the game with the latest version of the Unreal Engine, 5.4, and the trailer turned out to be a visual showcase of the engine.
Hennig first announced her current studio, which is under the umbrella of Skydance Media, in 2019. And although we hadn’t seen a glimpse of any of the studio’s work until now, it is clear that the team was busy: the Marvel game was announced in 2021 and a Star Wars title in 2022.
Both titles are part of a growing line of Disney’s high-budget games, which has recruited developers like Insomniac, Quantic Dream, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Respawn, Arkane and others to reactivate their gaming efforts. 1943: Rise of Hydra will be released sometime in 2025.
