The catalog of Apple TV+ is one of the most extensive and interesting among current streaming platforms. Thanks to its expertise in genres such as science fiction, where they are crowned as the main kings – far above Netflix or HBO Max – Apple TV+ is becoming one of the main competitors in VOD.

In recent years, it has released all kinds of series with large-scale production design. But there is one that has gone unnoticed and yet deserves a new opportunity from its audience. We are talking about Amazing Stories, an anthology of science fiction and fantasy that tries to revive the spirit of awe and wonder of the original created by Steven Spielberg in the 80s.

Discover the magic of Amazing Stories

Amazing Stories is actually a reboot of the original NBC series. Produced by Spielberg, it offered new stories every week in the style of other shows like The Twilight Zone. In this new version, Spielberg is producing again through his company Amblin Television, and aims to bring modern audiences tales that blend fantasy, science fiction, and the supernatural, with high-quality production and a focus on human emotions.

At the time, the series received mixed reviews, and many believed that it did not always manage to meet the expectations generated by its illustrious predecessor. Something that, by the way, also happened to Jordan Pelee’s Twilight Zone in its reboot. However, I believe that it is necessary to give it a second chance, as few anthologies of this quality have been seen in recent years.

Amazing Stories consists of five episodes, each with an independent story. This anthology format allows for a wide variety of themes and tones, which is one of the strengths of the series, as it can offer something different in each installment and allows you to watch it in your own way.

One of the standout episodes of Amazing Stories is “The Cellar,” which tells the story of a young man named Sam (Dylan O’Brien). While working on renovating an old house, Sam discovers a cellar that transports him to the past. There, he meets Evelyn (Victoria Pedretti), a woman with dreams of a better life. The story blends elements of romance and time travel, creating an intriguing and nostalgic narrative that captivates the viewer.

Another notable episode is Dynoman and the Volt, which follows a grandfather and his grandson who discover a ring that gives them superpowers. This story explores family dynamics and intergenerational legacy, touching sensitive chords about the importance of family bonds and the desire to make a positive impact on future generations. Robert Forster’s performance as the grandfather is particularly moving, adding a layer of emotional authenticity that elevates the episode.

In fact, the performances in Amazing Stories are the highlight of the series. Instead of having a cold and distant tone like anthologies such as Black Mirror, Amazing Stories focuses on people and their feelings, bringing emotion to the forefront. Additionally, the series features a talented cast that includes actors like Dylan O’Brien, Robert Forster, and other top-notch performers like Victoria Pedretti.

In terms of production, Amazing Stories doesn’t skimp on details. The special effects are top-notch and the cinematography is on par with series like Foundation or Constellation. Additionally, each episode is directed by a different director, which contributes to the diversity of styles and approaches.

Undoubtedly, Amazing Stories is one of the many gems that Apple TV+ has and that we easily miss out on because we don’t know about them. There is never a bad time to subscribe to see what this precious platform is capable of.
