The launch of Marvel’s Avengers in 2020 marked a low point in Marvel’s trajectory in the video game industry. Despite high expectations, the game failed to resonate with players, leading to the closure of Crystal Dynamics in 2022. Factors such as design decisions, controversial monetization, and lack of content were decisive in this failure, contrasting sharply with the success of Marvel Rivals.
However, not everything is lost for Marvel heroes in the digital realm. Joe Russo, co-director of the acclaimed Avengers films, has expressed his interest in returning to the world of video games through his studio AGBO. In a recent interview with Variety, Russo hinted that his team is “definitely open” to developing a video game that connects to the upcoming films in the franchise, specifically Doomsday and Secret Wars.
They are already working with the Fortnite creator on a video game
AGBO, where the Russo brothers are working together with Donald Mustard, known for being the creator of Fortnite, seeks to innovate in video game storytelling. In statements collected by PC Gamer, Russo mentioned that they are in tune with games, highlighting that the partnership with Mustard will allow them to explore a hybrid approach to storytelling that combines linear and virtual elements.
Although details about the new project are still scarce, what is clear is that video games will play a crucial role in the Russo brothers’ future agenda. Their ambition is to create new IPs that offer a scale and depth that rival the Star Wars universe, marking a new beginning for Marvel adaptations in the video game sector.
