A rift appears to be forming between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump over a growing disagreement regarding tariffs.
Once allies, Musk has recently expressed concerns about tariffs on trade, stating that they would have a “significant impact” on Tesla’s operations.
This marks a notable shift in his stance, given that he had previously remained silent on the issue despite Trump’s aggressive tariff policies affecting trade with multiple countries, including China, Canada, and Mexico.
Growing discord: Musk brands Trump’s trade advisor a ‘moron’ amid tariff tensions
Musk’s concerns echo those voiced by his brother, Kimball Musk, who serves on Tesla’s board. Kimball has publicly criticized the tariffs, illustrating the widening gap between the Musk family and the Trump administration.
Just a few years prior, Musk praised Trump, asserting that he was the only one capable of saving the Western world. However, it seems those sentiments are fading as both he and his brother now question Trump’s fixation on tariffs.
During a recent conversation with Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, Elon Musk expressed a desire for a zero-tariff situation, envisioning a free trade zone between Europe and North America. This proactive stance marks Musk’s first significant pushback against Trump’s policies, signifying a potential turning point in their relationship.
Tensions escalated further when Musk referred to Peter Navarro, Trump’s trade advisor, as a “moron” in an exchange on social media, highlighting a growing discord in their previously amicable relationship.
While many speculate that Musk’s ties to Trump may not survive until 2025, the fallout could be happening sooner than expected. Observers note that Trump has shown a propensity to pivot on policy matters, and with Musk’s standing as a key influencer, the possibility of a major shift in their dynamic looms large.
With both men’s public images facing challenges, the future of their partnership remains uncertain as they head into potentially contentious waters.
