How to update the apps on your iPhone or iPad? Easy, they update themselves. In general we do not have to do anything on our own, when the device has enough battery and network connection installs updates automatically. A system that works very well and, however, sometimes I could give some error, this is what we can do if it happens to us.
Five resources for downloading updates that resist
If for whatever reason the update of certain apps on our iPhone or iPad fails, we have several resources to turn to in order to remedy the situation. The first is, of course, check the internet connection of our device or use the Internet Sharing function, then we can follow these steps.
1. Check for updates manually
This is the first resource we will try. With these steps we will force the App Store to check for updates and, once found, we will ask it to install them. We will do it like this:
- We open the App Store app on our iPhone or iPad.
- Go to the Today tab.
- We touch our photo at the top right.
- We slide from the center of the screen to the bottom to update the section.
- Tap Update all.
2. Check download size and network settings
From a certain size the apps need a Wi-Fi network to update, this is something we can decide in Settings. The steps are as follows:
- We open the Settings app on our iPhone or iPad.
- Go to App Store.
- Tap on App Downloads.
- Choose Always Allow.
Also if we are using a VPN connection we can try to disable it for a moment and see if the situation returns to normal.
3. Pause and resume download
If we manage to start the update process we will see that the app turns gray and a kind of clock is superimposed on it showing the download and installation process. During the process we can pause the download and then resume it, which will probably allow us to update the app without further complication.
- Press and hold on the app that is being updated.
- Tap Pause download.
- We press and hold again on the app.
- We touch Resume download.
4. Restart our iPhone or iPad
We rarely think about this resource, but the truth is that a simple reboot often solves many situations. In a reboot, all networks are disconnected and connected as well as the processes, which are restarted, so if there was any error that prevented the update, it is most likely to be solved.
5. Delete the app and download it again
Note that deleting the app will delete its contents. Before trying this action, let’s make sure that the app’s information is safe or does not contain anything we want to save. If it is a game, for example, the saved information would be our progress, so let’s assess what information the app stores and proceed accordingly.
The truth is that there are few times when an update resists beyond step four. If this is the case and we do not want to delete the app, it is best to wait a couple of days before doing anything, often the update is completed without further intervention. In any case remember that, if we need more help, apart from being able to do some cleaning of the iPhone to make room for the update, Apple Care is at our disposal.
