iOS 8, the new mobile operating system from Apple, will be released today, and is available for iPhone 4S and later, iPad 2 and later, and the iPod Touch 5th generation.
You’ll should be able to download iOS 8 from 1pm Eastern Time (10am Pacific Time). Europeans living in Central European Time will get the update at 7pm (6pm in Britain).
iOS isn’t a radical design change like iOS 7 was, but it does have some significant new features:
There’s a new Photos app, with new editing features, improved search, and ‘smart albums’ for organizing your images. The updated Messages app allows you to record sound (similar to WhatsApp), send video, and share your location.
One of the most interesting developments is in keyboards. For the first time ever in iOS, you’ll be able to install alternative keyboards like SwiftKey, from the App Store. A new Health app manages your health and fitness data, which will be especially useful when combined with next year’s release of the Apple Watch.
You can check for your iOS 8 update by going into Settings, General and Software Update. As always with iOS, the update is free.
