The Pokémon Fossil Museum is a wondrous place for any Pokémon Go fan. Thanks to the Pokémon Toy Company and the Toyohashi Museum of Natural History, you can now explore the history held in the Fossil Museum without having to go to Japan!
The companies have pooled their resources to give fans the opportunity to take a virtual tour of the museum anytime from now until November. The Pokémon Fossil Museum was created primarily to teach children about dinosaurs and fossils.
To spur children to learn about the histories of the real world and the significance of dinosaurs’ fossils, the museum features side-by-side comparisons of Pokémon and their fossilized versions, complete with information panels. This way, the museum is both a place of fun and education – as museums should be.
The museum kicked off last year in Hokkaido. Since then, its been to Shimane and Tokyo, and this week it arrived in Toyohashi at the Museum of Natural History. Even though nothing has been confirmed as yet, more venues may be announced soon, according to the official website. We expect the Pokémon Fossil Museum to hit another city after the Toyohashi experience closes in November.

At the beginning of the franchise, players have been able to obtain ancient Pokémon through fossils. Pokémon fossils are even a prominent feature in the anime. Much like the non-fossilized Pokémon, the fossils in the franchise are based on real-world species. This connection with real-world paleontology and biological organisms gives the franchise, and the museum, a distinct edge in terms of an educational resource.
We now move on from fossilized Pokémon to a company that may become a fossil if its current trajectory doesn’t change; the developer of Pokémon Go, Niantic, is facing a financial crisis and has canceled four of its work-in-progress projects so far.
