The power of Barbie knows no bounds. Since her debut in the 1960s, Mattel has built a true empire around this iconic doll. But it doesn’t stop at toys. Video games, animated films (and now live-action movies), comics, and books—nothing can resist the most famous doll in history.
Detective Barbie
It is well known that Barbie has had hundreds of careers. One of her most recognized roles has been as a detective, which began in 1998 with “Mystery of the Carnival Caper.” In this PC point-and-click game, Barbie guided us through a pre-rendered and somewhat eerie setting as we tried to uncover the whereabouts of Ken and a substantial sum of money. It’s a true classic.
Barbie Fashion Designer
Released in 1996, Barbie Fashion Designer allowed players to create and design clothing for their Barbie dolls. You would print out patterns of your designs and then sew them in real life.
Thanks to the unexpected success of Barbie (at the time, it surpassed Quake and Doom in its first months), the development of video games for girls was significantly encouraged. Its importance was such that in May of this same year, Barbie Fashion Designer was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame, alongside titles like The Last of Us.
Barbie Horse Adventures
For some reason, there seems to be a correlation between loving Barbies and loving horses. At least that’s how it appears, given the large number of Barbie games centered around riding and taking care of horses. In total, there are four titles in this “saga”: Blue Ribbon Race (Game Boy Advance), Mystery Ride (PC), Wild Horse Rescue (PlayStation 2), and Riding Camp (Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, Wii, and PC). The mechanics of these games are simple but still entertaining and relaxing. Taking care of your horses, riding them, going on walks… what more could you ask for?
However, there is one game that manages to stand out among them all, and that is Horse Adventures. If you ever played it, watching this video will likely bring back nostalgia.
The world of Barbie.com
In the early days of the internet, flash mini-game websites were the norm. Pages like Minijuegos.com have been a fundamental pillar of many people’s childhood, and Barbie was no exception. The Barbie.com website was filled with many short and relatively basic games, but they were still entertaining. If you want to revisit them once again, you can always turn to the WayBack Machine.
Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures
We leave the 2000s behind and return to the present. Like many franchises and well-known names, Barbie has ventured into the mobile world to offer us Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures. This free-to-play title is available for both Android and iOS, and in it, we can do a little bit of everything: cooking, chatting with Barbie’s friends, designing your room, and dressing up in fashionable outfits.
