It is likely that we are not mistaken in stating that Super Mario is the most famous video game character in history. A fame that has not been repeated in the cinemas, with such notorious disasters as the Super Mario Bros of 1993. Luckily, the story changed in 2023 thanks to the enormous success of Super Mario Bros.: the movie, the animated adaptation by Illumination. Now, Nintendo wants to continue the winning streak and confirms that there will be a sequel.
Furthermore, we already know the release date. According to an official statement published by Nintendo, the sequel to Super Mario Bros.: the movie will arrive in theaters on April 3, 2026. In the case of no delays, the film would come three years after the release of its first part.
The sequel will be produced by Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination, and Shigeru Miyamoto, father of Super Mario and creative advisor at Nintendo. Aaron Horvath will return as director alongside Michael Jelenic, and Mathew Fogel will once again take the reins of the script.
The success of Super Mario in cinemas shattered all kinds of expectations, grossing over 1.3 billion dollars worldwide. Not content with that, it has also become the highest-grossing video game-based movie in history.
