And with every new release, smartphones have become more powerful and all-encompassing. Keeping in mind all this, it’s a no-brainer that year after year, smartphone adoption and daily screen time are increasing at an alarming rate. But how much smartphones have transformed the way we live, work and interact in society?

As of 2024, it is estimated that 4.88 billion people worldwide own a smartphone. This number has been increasing exponentially since 2020, adding 2.61 billion new smartphone owners over the years. In fact, according to Statista, it is estimated that the numbers will increase by 1.8 billion users (42.62%) from 2024 to 2029.

Time Spent Using Smartphones Statistics
Recent data shared by Harmony Healthcare IT shows how the average person spends 4 hours and 37 on their smartphone every day. While this number might not seem much at first glance, if we look at it in a weekly perspective it’s the equivalent of one whole day spent on our smartphone or 6 whole days per month.
On average, most people check their phones 58 times a day, and from those check-ins, 30 are during working hours (9 am to 5 pm). It is estimated that we lose at least 37.5 minutes of working time per day simply by picking up our smartphones to check on them.
If we look at this matter closely, recent data shows how picking up the phone has become a daily habit, with 70% of these pick-ups resulting in sessions of 2 minutes or less. Here’s a detailed look on how much time we spend on smartphones by pick-up.
- Less than 2 mins – 40 times per day (70% of the daily pick-ups)
- 2-10 minutes – 15 times per day (25% of the daily pick-ups)
- +10 minutes – 3 times per day (5% of the daily pick-ups)
Taking in consideration the data gathered by Rescue Time, we can conclude that the time spent on a smartphone per pick-up is around 1 minute and 15 seconds on average.

According to the State of Mobile 2024 report by Sensor Tower, the average time spent on smartphones among users in 20 different markets is 4.37 hours per day. Countries like Indonesia lead the least with the most daily time on smartphones with 6.05 hours. In second position we find Thailand with 5.64 hours and closing the top 3 we find Argentina with 5.33 hours.

The average American adult spends 4 hours and 39 minutes on their smartphone on a daily basis. In fact, a recent report by Harmony Healthcare IT shows how 36% of Amercians believe they have a screen time addiction and that they wouldn’t be able to go 24 hours without checking their phones.
If we delve deep in this study, we find out that US children get their first phone at the age 12 and that there’s a clear correlation with people’s age and time spent on their smartphone. In fact, Gen Z smartphone users (people born between 1995-2012) lead the list of screen time usage in the US, spending an average of 6 hours and 5 minutes with their mobile device.
Here’s a complete breakdown of daily time spent using smartphones in correlation to the users’ generation:
- Gen Z ( 1995-2012)- 6 hours and 5 minutes.
- Millennials (1980-1994)- 4 hours and 36 minutes.

Conclusion
It’s undeniable that smartphone usage and mobile screen time consumption has grown at an arguably alarming rate during the past decade. This trend doesn’t seem to have reached its peak yet, and even though we will eventually reach a plateau and a decline, there’s no indicator that points that it will be anytime soon.
