The GTA 6 leak is real, and Uber says the feds are involved now

Breaking news: The GTA 6 leak has been confirmed as legit and, according to Uber, the federal government of the United States is getting involved. You can tell how big this moment in gaming history is by how much we’ve covered it so far, and something tells me this is only the beginning.

We reported on the GTA 6 leak yesterday morning in two articles. The first covered the leaked content, and the second was a deep dive into the more technical details surrounding the breach of Uber in cybersecurity itself. In this article, however, we take a look at Rockstar’s announcement to the community on Twitter concerning the leak, and the possibility that a notorious hacker collective could be behind the cybersecurity attack. 

Evidence has already established the hacker/ hackers responsible for the leak are the same as the entity that recently also hacked Uber and not just GTA 6. The entity even refers to itself as TeapotUberHacker, a nod to the recent breach in Uber’s cybersecurity. Now, Uber has put forth that the entity responsible is none other than Lapsus, a hacker collective that has been confirmed to have been behind breaches at Microsoft and Nvidia.

In a recent statement, Uber had this to say: ‘This group typically uses similar techniques to target technology companies and in 2022 alone has breached Microsoft, Cisco, Samsung, Nvidia and Okta among others. There are also reports over the weekend that this same actor breached video game maker Rockstar.’

Furthermore, the company asserted that it is in ‘close coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice on this matter and will continue to support their efforts.’ Rockstar is supporting the investigation as well. 

Rockstar recently released an announcement on Twitter in which it addressed the recent breach and expressed its frustration at the situation. However, the company says that ‘at this time, we do not anticipate any disruption to our live game services nor any long-term effect on the development of our ongoing projects.’ This refers to the development of GTA 6 which the company says will go forth.

However, there’s a little fib in the statement that may call it into question. Rockstar stated that only early footage of the game was leaked. However, we know from the hacker entity itself that this is not the case. ‘It’s possible I could leak more data soon, GTA 5 and 6 source code and assets, GTA 6 testing build.’
