Morning bombshell to kick off Monday and the week: Sony is preparing a new PlayStation portable. The one that would follow PSP and PS Vita is currently in an “early stage” of development, so its release is far from happening in a short period of time.
The information was revealed this morning by Bloomberg, a media outlet well-known for publishing relevant information about video game companies’ hardware. According to the sources interviewed, “the product aims to expand Sony’s reach and compete with Nintendo in the portable gaming market“, a territory where the Nintendo Switch is the clear leader.
It is worth noting that this portable device would be completely native, meaning, it has nothing to do with PlayStation Portal, the device that allows streaming PlayStation 5 video games. Thanks to this change, this portable device, which would have a very similar size to the aforementioned PlayStation Portal, would allow playing PS5 games thanks to its hardware without the need for its bigger sibling, in addition to also having titles developed for the console itself.
We must not forget that Xbox recently announced that it was working on the development of a portable console within its family, a great proof that video game companies have seen the potential that still exists within the handheld market.
As regular readers of the video game world will know, Nintendo Switch has already surpassed 146 million consoles sold, an impressive figure that leaves it very close to PlayStation 2, the best-selling system in history. During this Christmas season, this number will grow significantly, but we must not forget that the successor to the Switch is close to being announced.
