In recent years, the technology sector has found a new focus to exploit: artificial intelligence. After the emergence of OpenAI and its well-known ChatGPT, big tech companies have stepped up their research and development efforts in AI. Google is one of them, as demonstrated by Project Astra, presented during its Google I/O 2024 event.
If we had to describe Project Astra in a few words, we could say that it’s the perfect blend of Google Assistant and Google Gemini. However, the truth is that it’s much more than that.
Project Astra is the result of years of research and development by Google Deepmind, the company’s artificial intelligence division. For Google, Astra is much more than a simple command executor. As explained on its website, this technology is capable of “processing multimodal information (text recognition, images, video, and audio), understanding the context in which you are and responding naturally in a conversation”.

And the heart of Project Astra lies in its ability to perceive and understand the environment through the camera of any mobile device. Through artificial intelligence, Astra can identify objects, remember previous interactions, and respond naturally to user queries.
Project Astra also stands out for its strong integration with any device. In one of the demos published by Google, we can see firsthand how Astra works on a mobile phone. Here, a user asks Astra to identify any object in her environment that plays sounds. Through the mobile phone’s camera, Astra is able to detect a speaker, for example. And as if that weren’t enough, it can also identify its parts.

However, Project Astra is still in its early stages of development and, for now, it is not expected to be publicly available until 2025. Nevertheless, Google claims that some of Astra’s features “will be coming to Google products like the Gemini app later this year.”
