In 2020, Twitch abruptly removed one of its most prominent streamers, Dr Disrespect, from its platform. Four years after his permanent ban, two former employees of the platform have decided to break their silence and reveal the reasons behind this controversial measure.
One of them, anonymously explained to The Verge that Beahm had used the Whisper feature (Twitch’s now-extinct private messages) to exchange messages with a minor and meet her at TwitchCon. This former employee belonged to the platform’s security team in 2020, the year of the ban.
The statements of this former worker also coincide with those of Cody Conners, another former employee of Twitch who worked on the strategic partnerships team. Last Friday, Conners posted on his X profile, which, although not directly pointing to Beahm, does seem to allude to him.
There, he claims that “he was banned because he was caught sending sexual messages to a minor through the then-existing Twitch whispers. He was trying to meet her at TwitchCon. Those who received them could read (the conversation) in plain text.”
Shortly after Connors’ publication, Beahms proceeded to deny the accusations in another post by X. According to Beahm, there were no irregularities: “I did nothing wrong, all of this has been investigated and resolved, nothing illegal, no irregularities were found and I got paid.”
The expulsion of Dr Disrespect occurred after changes in Twitch’s sexual harassment policies, which allow for permanent bans for offenders.
