Gladiator is one of the most popular films of the 21st century. Released in 2000, Ridley Scott’s film instantly became a legend that boosted the careers of Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, and managed to win the Oscar for Best Picture that year. Undoubtedly, it marked a before and after in cinema of this style, but few expected a sequel to be made.
Back in 2001, producer Douglas Wick confirmed that a prequel to the film would be made, but the project has changed over the years, and a sequel written by Peter Craig will finally be shot. Production is already underway and the cast has been cast, so all that remains is to shoot it and get it into theaters. But what exactly do we know about this future film?
What is Gladiator 2 about? The synopsis
Clearly, a sequel to a film like Gladiator looks good, especially if they have taken so many years to decide and have decided that it is worth it. However, it will all depend on the story Ridley Scott wants to tell. The first film worked as a single unit, so they have to come up with something very interesting to follow the story.
This time, the story focuses on Lucius, Commodus’ nephew. Lucius was scarred by the sacrifice of Maximus Decimus Meridius in the original film, but in this film he will get to live his own story. Lucius is second in line to the throne, and in the first film the actor who played him was Spencer Treat Clark.
From what little we saw of him in the first film, the fact that it could happen to him on the lathe provokes the emperor’s undeterred hatred, which he conceals as best he can. At the end of the film, Lucius and Lucila are saved by Maximus from Commodus, and it is what the gladiator has left of his sense of the world. Now, they are the ones who must carry his spirit further.
In this new story, we will most likely see how this character has evolved and what path he has taken after such a disrupted youth as the one he has lived through. Undoubtedly, the paths that can be taken are many, but they all look very interesting.
Who will be in Gladiator 2? The cast
The most striking thing about Gladiator 2, at the moment, is its cast. As was the case with the first installment, the film rubs shoulders with some of the best actors of their respective generations. In fact, it features two of the latest Oscar nominees and Pedro Pascal, who hasn’t been nominated but kind of is.
At the moment, we know that Paul Mescal (Aftersun) will be Lucio, the protagonist of this great film. Connie Nielsen will be Lucilla, the protagonist’s sister. Joseph Quinn (yes, Eddie from Stranger Things) will be Emperor Caracalla. Barry Keoghan, one of the biggest stars of the moment, will be Geta. And Djimon Hounsou will be Juba.
But the film’s two biggest confirmed stars are in as-yet unconfirmed roles – Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington. Yes, both actors will appear in the film, although it is not known in which roles. It doesn’t look like Russel Crowe will be in the film as Maximus, for obvious reasons.
When is Gladiator 2 released? The date
After confirming all the cast and production, it only remains to know when it will be shot and then released. The scriptwriters’ strike may affect them, since despite the fact that it is based on an already written script, any subsequent changes would have to go through the hands of the writers and that would cause a delay. In any case, nothing has been confirmed yet.
