Gerard Piqué, president of the Kings League, has spoken out in a recent interview with the sports newspaper Marca. The former central defender of FC Barcelona has responded to the criticisms that the presidents of the competition are making about the Kings League, in particular those made by Ibai Llanos.
Piqué’s response could not have been more blunt: “I already said it in the program: I didn’t come here to make people like me”. “The president of the league, normally, is a hated guy; I wouldn’t say hated, but a guy that people don’t like. But we know our role. I mean, we don’t have to look out for one team or another team; we have to look out for the dynamics of the competition and what’s best for the audience. A certain amount of friction, as long as no disrespect is shown, I think it’s good for the audience because they like it when there’s spice and a lot of fuss.
This controversy arises after the statements made by Ibai Llanos in the After Kings of matchday 10. The Basque streamer complained in a very serious way about the rules of the competition: “The referees look at the VAR with a Twitch clip on a giant screen and throw the offside by eye. It’s the most regrettable thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”
In this sense, Ibai wanted to specify that the fault was not as such of the referees, but of the competition: “I have no problem with the referees, I have a problem with the league you have set up“.
We must not forget that the Kings League is in its final stretch. This coming Sunday, the grand final will take place at the Spotify Camp Nou in front of more than 70,000 spectators who have already bought their tickets.
