Sony continues to accumulate records. The Japanese company has announced today that PlayStation 5 has surpassed 50 million units sold. The figure is already impressive, but it is even more so when you consider everything that has happened in the market over the past three years: global pandemic, component crisis, lack of stock, delays in video game development, and much more.
“We are grateful to all our players, those who have joined this journey with PS5, and we are excited that this will be the first Christmas since the console’s launch where we have PS5 stock without problems,” comments Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, in the official statement published by the company.
The sales pace of PS5 is truly spectacular. If compared to PlayStation 4, PS5 is only one week behind its older sister. As Financial Times explains, Sony’s hardware has grown by 65% – compared to last year – in sales, reaching 22.5 million units. Nintendo and Microsoft, on the other hand, have decreased by 18% and 15% with Switch and Xbox respectively.

The expected fiscal data by Sony is 25 million PlayStation 5 units sold by March 31, 2024. The current pace suggests that the forecasts will be met, making it one of the best years in PlayStation’s sales history. Ahead of it are PlayStation 3 with 86 million units, PlayStation 4 with 117 million, and PlayStation 2 with 156 million (best-selling console of all time). Only time will tell where PlayStation 5 stands.
