Sony becomes the main shareholder of Kadokawa, the owner of a large part of FromSoftware

Sony Group Corporation has signed a new agreement with Kadokawa Corporation under which the company will acquire 12,054,100 shares for 305 million euros. Following this move, Sony would own 10% of Kadokawa’s shares and also become its main shareholder.

In the released statement, they describe this agreement as a “strategic capital and business alliance” and state that Sony and Kadokawa will work together in the future to expand the intellectual properties of the latter with movies, TV series, anime, and much more.

Although Sony had previously approached Kadokawa with intentions to buy the company, this would have completely changed after this investment. In the statement itself, Sony clarifies that, as of today, there are no plans to increase the percentage of participation within the company.

One of the reasons why Sony might have decided against buying Kadokawa was the high cost of such a move. According to expert estimates, the acquisition could have cost the company more than 4.1 billion euros.

Kadokawa Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate that operates in many creative sectors. Among other things, they are responsible for publishing books, mangas, producing animes, video games, and even movies and series. In fact, this approach by Sony towards Kadokawa has already sparked rumors about the production of a movie or series based on the Elden Ring universe.

Kadokawa is a well-known name in the video game world for owning 70% of the shares of FromSoftware, the studio responsible for Dark Souls, Sekiro, and Elden Ring. Besides FromSoftware, Kadokawa also owns Acquire (Octopath Traveller), Spike Chunsoft (Danganronpa, Mystery Dungeon), and Gotcha Gotcha Games (RPG Maker).
