The trailer for Martin Scorsese’s new movie “The Irishman” is finally here, and it looks incredible

Pacino

As you can tell, this is one star-studded cast. You got Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemons, Harvey Keitel, and the triumphant return of Joe Pesci! Also, Italian comedians Sebastian Maniscalco and Ray Romano even have roles in this movie!

The background

Hoffa

The movie revolves around De Niro as Frank Sheeran as he chronicles his involvement in Jimmy Hoffa’s ( Al Pacino) death and disappearance. The movie is based on the book “I Heard You Paint Houses” by Charles Brandt. Before he died, Sheeran told Brandt about his involvement with Jimmy Hoffa. In case you didn’t know, Hoffa was the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and he mysteriously went missing in 1975. Although he was declared dead after being missing for years, a body has never been found. According to the book, the union leader’s relationship with the mafia resulted in his death.

After not appearing in a movie in nearly five years, Joe Pesci is returning to film as Russell Bufalino, the real-life head of the Bufalino Crime Family.

Hoffa had hired Sheeran as a hitman, and for muscle to help in the fight against rival unions. Bufalino put Hoffa in touch with Sheeran. The phrase “I Heard You Paint Houses,” was the password Hoffa said to Sheeran to let him know that he needed his hitman services.

Why do they look so young?

The Irishman

If you didn’t notice, many of these legendary actors look much younger in several scenes in this movie than they do in real life. The filmmakers used CGI to de-age the actors so they can appear 30 years younger.

It is a little upsetting that the filmmakers are resorting to using CGI rather than make-up to de-age their actors. If you remember, more than 10 years ago, the film “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” shocked the world with the incredible make-up used to change the ages of the actors.

The CGI effect still looks pretty good, and we’re guessing that since several of the stars in this film are pushing 80, they didn’t want to be stuck in a make-up chair for hours.

Wrapping up

“The Irishman” is truly a passion project for Scorsese, and there is already a boatload of Oscar buzz around it already.

Scorsese has made several incredible organized crime movies throughout the ages including “GoodFellas,” “Casino,” “Gangs of New York,” and “The Departed.” Scorsese does a phenomenal job of taking larger-than-life criminals and making them both human and vulnerable.

The movie is set to come out on Netflix this fall, and will also have a limited release in select theaters.
