The Volkswagen ID.4 has surpassed the Tesla Model Y, becoming the best-selling electric vehicle in Europe in January, with 7,177 registrations.
This remarkable increase of 195% compared to the previous year occurs despite the total registration of new vehicles in the region falling by 2%. According to data from JATO Dynamics, sales of battery electric vehicles (BEV) increased by 37%, reaching a total of 165,473 units in January.
The performance of Tesla’s Model Y was less encouraging, as its registrations decreased by 46% in the same month, achieving only 6,155 records.

In addition, the Model 3 also showed a significant drop of 44% in registrations. In total, Tesla registered only 9,913 vehicles, which represents a 45% drop compared to January of the previous year.
Felipe Munoz, global analyst at JATO, commented that this decline in sales could be indicative of a loss of popularity for Tesla in Europe.
The ID.4 not only leads in Europe; in the United States, it also ranked third in electric vehicle sales, behind the Model Y and the Model 3. However, Tesla is facing increased competition, particularly from Chinese brands like BYD and MG, which have recorded a total of 37,134 vehicles, representing 3.7% of the European market. This marks a notable rise from 2.4% in January 2024.
Despite the success of the ID.4 in Europe and the United States, Volkswagen faces challenges in the Chinese market. Recent reports indicate that the company has reduced the price of its local version of the ID.4 to less than $20,000.
With aggressive pricing strategies and a positive market response, the future of the ID.4 could further consolidate its position in the electric segments worldwide.
