Hyundai and Kia have confirmed that they do not expect to launch solid-state batteries for electric vehicles before 2030, noting that the complexity of this technology creates “a lot of uncertainty.”
During the Kia EV Day event, Spencer Cho, head of global production planning at Hyundai, emphasized that the commercialization of these batteries could be delayed even beyond the stipulated date.
Meanwhile, both South Korean brands plan to focus on improving existing battery technologies, such as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel, manganese, and cobalt (NMC).
The future of batteries lies with Toyota and BYD
This approach will allow them to maximize the efficiency of their electric vehicles without waiting for the development of new solid-state technology.
For their part, other major players in the automotive industry, such as Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Stellantis, Honda, and the Chinese battery giants CATL and BYD, are also in the race to develop solid-state batteries.
Mercedes-Benz, for example, has begun testing its electric vehicle that operates with a solid-state battery, promoting a range exceeding 621 miles. The company has been collaborating with Factorial Energy since 2021 to accelerate this development.
Regarding Toyota, it has formed a partnership with Idemitsu, seeking to market its own solid-state batteries, with initial production scheduled for 2027 or 2028 and mass production projected for 2030. For its part, BYD plans to introduce its first electric vehicle with this technology in 2027, although large-scale production is not anticipated before 2030.
The landscape of solid-state batteries remains competitive and full of expectations, and all eyes will be on how various manufacturers progress in this promising technology over the coming years.
