The success of Wolfs on Apple TV+ has not translated into good news for the second installment of the movie. Despite becoming the most-watched movie in the platform’s history in just a few days, its director, Jon Watts, has decided to cancel the development of a sequel.

A surprising decision after the success of Wolfs

Wolfs has been a true phenomenon since its premiere, with Brad Pitt and George Clooney leading a spectacular cast. Its humor and action stand out and with that, we could think that a sequel was inevitable. In fact, Apple confirmed the project in a statement last August, revealing that Watts was already working on the script. However, the director has decided to backtrack.

According to Deadline, Watts, the main reason for his decision is a change in Apple’s strategy. The film was going to have an extensive theatrical release, but at the last minute, Apple opted for a more limited distribution, followed by its arrival on streaming.

An apparently simple decision that did not sit well with Watts. The director stated that the decision, which was not communicated to him “until a week before the premiere,” made him feel that “he could not trust Apple as a creative partner.”

This cancellation leaves a considerable void. Wolfs has been a success for Apple TV+, and stood out among the current offerings of action and comedy films. A movie that has achieved global impact despite having only briefly passed through theaters and whose second installment should have followed the same path.

Not to mention that, with the development time of a film of these characteristics, a release with more presence in theaters could well have been back on the table. In any case, the project is up in the air for now. We’ll see if, like Wolfs, it takes an interesting turn.
