Toyota’s electrified vehicle sales, which include hybrid models, plug-in hybrids, electric vehicles (EVs), and fuel cell vehicles, accounted for 43% of total sales volume in the U.S. in 2024, a significant increase from the 29% recorded in 2023.
This growth highlights the strengthening of the electrification strategy of the Japanese company, especially in the hybrid segment.
Looking to the future, Toyota anticipates that sales of electrified vehicles will exceed 50% by 2025.
50% Goal for 2025
According to David Crist, vice president of the Toyota Division group and general manager for North America, it is possible that hybrid sales alone may also exceed 50% during the same period.
This focus on hybrids is partly due to the newly inaugurated battery plan in North Carolina, which will start producing cells for hybrids and EVs starting this year.
The North Carolina plant, which began construction in 2021, underwent a $2.5 billion expansion in 2022, increasing its battery manufacturing capacity. This development is designed to enhance the supply chain and facilitate the production of more electrified vehicles intended for the U.S. market.
Almost all Toyota models in the U.S. now offer a hybrid powertrain option, with the Camry sold exclusively in its hybrid version.
Despite Toyota’s considerations regarding the possible elimination of internal combustion engine car sales in the U.S., hybrids and plug-in models are expected to continue dominating its electrified vehicle offerings in the short term.
On the other hand, the company still faces significant challenges in selling fully electric vehicles, as evidenced by the limited sales of the Mirai, its fuel cell model, which are mainly restricted to California.
