Frank Zappa spent three decades being a benchmark in rock, jazz, blues, electronica… In the late 60s, this Californian did not know that what he was about to do had not been done before in music. And we thank him for it.

Thirty years ago he passed away and with him the best portraits of the rock world came to an end. Because Frank Zappa is not very well known today by the new generations, but his rebellious image is well known: mustache, goatee and long curly hair.

A genius who was much more than a Gibson SG

For those who are lost, Frank Zappa was an American musician, composer and film director born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1940 and died in Los Angeles, California, in 1993.

He is considered one of the most innovative and influential artists in rock and experimental music.

Zappa began his musical career in the 1960s with the band The Mothers of Invention, which he founded in 1964. Throughout his career, Zappa explored a wide variety of musical genres, from rock and jazz to classical and electronic music. Almost always with political and social themes.

Zappa was also an advocate of free speech and fought against censorship in music and other artistic media. In the 1980s, he founded the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center), an organization that opposed explicit lyrics in popular music.

In addition to his musical career, Zappa also dabbled in film, directing and producing several films and documentaries over the years.

His album Hot Rats (1969), is considered one of his most influential works and has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for its fusion of genres and musical complexity.

And as you may have guessed, the images we have posted are not real. They are created with DALL-E and Stable Diffusion. The first and the last one is from Stable Diffusion, being very faithful to how Frank Zappa really looked like.

While the sketch is the work of DALL-E, a tool of OpenAI that always pulls towards the drawing and not towards the faithful portrait. The truth: they are images that could be close to reality.
