OpenAI has announced a new service: SearchGPT. An artificial intelligence-powered search prototype that promises to directly compete with Google and Perplexity in their own field. A tool that not only aims to transform how we obtain information on the web, but also presents itself as a direct challenge to conventional internet search methods.
From searching on the web to finding on the web
SearchGPT integrates conversational capabilities with real-time access to updated information, allowing us to obtain quick and relevant answers. Unlike traditional search engines, which often require navigation between different links to find complete answers, SearchGPT simplifies this process by providing direct answers accompanied by clear and relevant sources for our question.

Currently, access to SearchGPT is limited to a small group of users who will have the opportunity to test the system and provide feedback. We can join the waiting list on their website. With this gradual implementation approach, OpenAI will be able to fine-tune the tool based on real feedback before its full integration in future versions of ChatGPT.
According to OpenAI, one of the most innovative aspects of SearchGPT is its ability to handle follow-up questions in a conversational format, maintaining context in each new interaction. This facilitates a much more natural and fluid search, aspects that are essential in the era of fast information.
OpenAI has also expressed its commitment to the ecosystem of writers and content creators, emphasizing its desire to help users discover the websites of these authors. The results provided by SearchGPT include clearly labeled attributions and links, ensuring that as users we are aware of the sources of information. In addition, writers have the ability to manage how they appear in SearchGPT results, reinforcing transparency and control over how content is used on the web.
In what seems to be an AI-powered search solution better than Google’s own, we could be facing a tool that can mark a before and after in how we obtain information. Despite the criticism of how Perplexity obtains information, it is clear that the service has earned a place among the favorites of many browsers. Now, with the reach of ChatGPT and also with its future integration in iOS 18 with Apple Intelligence, the search landscape can change a lot.
While Google withdraws the appearance of AI in searches, the strategy of the largest internet search engine in terms of artificial intelligence is not clear. It may be with Gemini, no doubt, but perhaps not so much in the field of searches themselves. This is where OpenAI has seen room for improvement. While we can deactivate AI Overviews, the way of searching seems to be called to be replaced by the way of finding. We will no longer be the ones who have to navigate through 7 pages and click on 4 links to get an answer, AI, in this case OpenAI, will do the work for us.
