This movie can save cinema from having, for the first time in history, the top 10 of the year be all sequels

2024 is not a bad year for cinema, but after such curious phenomena as those we experienced in 2023, it is marking a return to the festival of sequels that the box office has become today. In fact, right now, we have some very discouraging data: all the Top 10 highest-grossing movies are sequels.

Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, Despicable Me 4, Dune: Part 2, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kung Fu Panda 4, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Venom: The Last Dance, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. All these movies are sequels to previous films, and they make up the Top 10 box office hits of the year.

Will Wicked save this trend?

However, in the last week, a movie has been released that could change this trend: Wicked. The adaptation of the Broadway musical has everything to make it into the Top 10, which would change this trend and be a small glimmer of hope for Hollywood. That said, it should be noted that the movie will be divided into two parts… so it is not exempt from being part of this phenomenon.
