The Mandalorian is about to reach the third episode of its third season, and there is no doubt that the return of the adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu has been great news for Disney Plus. Although since it arrived in Spain in March 2020 -three years ago now- the platform has not stopped releasing successful content related to Star Wars, Marvel or Pixar, there is no doubt that The Mandalorian is its icon par excellence.

But, after two years without releasing any new episodes of the series, what has the return of The Mandalorian meant for Disney+? Although there is no official audience data, we can analyze some reports that have come in through different portals.

A mixed bag for The Mandalorian season 3

Parrot Analytics is a platform in charge of publishing the online presence of series. As it reported a week after its premiere, the Disney Plus fiction became the first to generate interest among the public, surpassing Stranger Things, which usually always leads.

Its online presence grew by 64.2% compared to its average, and increased by 35.7% compared to its last week. This means that the premiere generated great expectation, and many of those who followed the series showed interest again upon the arrival of season 3.

Parrot Analytics analyzes any type of online presence for a series, from social media posts to published articles. Audience numbers remain a mystery, as Disney Plus refuses to report them, but there is generally a correlation between audience demand and the number of people watching a series.

The Wrap has made its own analysis based on the audience trends compiled by Samba TV, which extracts data from more than 3 million U.S. households on more than 25 million connected TV sets. According to this data, despite being a good premiere, it has remained far from what was expected.

Apparently, The Mandalorian outperformed most of the Star Wars premieres, with 50% more audience than the latest spin-off of the saga, Andor, but only 2% more than The Book of Boba Fett. On the other hand, it remained well below other series such as Loki, which beat it by 35%, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, whose percentage was 28% higher.

Looking at these figures, it’s clear that audiences are suffering from Star Wars fatigue, although there’s still a lot of work to be done. Be that as it may, The Mandalorian remains one of the icons of Disney Plus, and looks set to remain so for a long time to come.
